I find this a wonderful companion book if you are not interested in running Pathfinder.

All in all, this is a fun scenario. I ran this using Savage Worlds rules for my players and the adventure was enjoyed by all. The players all bought into the Friendship is Magic concept in dealing with the villain.

The adventure has just enough open world in parts to not feel too incredibly railroady. The initial portion and when looking for multiple macguffins later on is open ended enough to give the players some agency on how they complete things. Admittedly the rest of the adventure can be a bit railroady but if you are dealing with newer or younger players that might not be a bad thing.

The various challenges that come up are varied and allow for some creative thinking to deal with them.

My only complaint is that the main villain makes multiple appearances and it can get frustrating when she escapes repeatedly. Other than that, it was a fun adventure.

SWADE Super Powers Companion

OK, this is going to be a simple review. Savaage Worlds Supers hits that sweet spot between full narrative games like Masks and more complex games like Champions/Mutants and Masterminds. While there are some areas where this game can get complex (creating heroes who are higher than Novice), I do find the system easy to use. It takes the core of SWADE and uses the FAST! FURIOUS! FUN! system on a whole new plane of existence.

The powers are broad enough that you should be able to create a superhero of your choice. You have base powers and then you apply trappings to them based on what you want to do. For example, you can have a ranged attack that is anything from fire, cold, or a swarm of bees. It's all the ranged attack power but described in different ways.

They have a large group of villains in the book. I believe this is good because if you are loking for inspiration or want to create a world, you can pick and choose what villains you want to use.

Basically, if you already enjoy Savage Worlds but realized the core rules are not going to support superpowered adventuring, this is the book for you. I do quibble that it is not hugely different from the Deluxe version. However, if you are a completist like me, you end up getting it anyway.

Overall, I enjoyed it immensely. IF you are a fan of the level of crunch in SWADE, it is worth it.

A Wicked Secret

I find this to be an excellent compilation of adventures for Vaesen. Admittedly, I don't want to say more because I would give away details that if you are a player you should not know. My only nitpicks, and I could be incorrect about the one, are these two.

  1. Doesn't the church in Sweeden at that time allow for married priests or am I completely off base on this? All the priests seem to be single.
  2. I don't think enough emphasis is put on the fact that the characters have the sight. There are adventures where everyone can seemingly see the Vaesen, which goes against the conceit of the game.

LIke I said, though, these are niotpicks. It is very nice to have horror that is not cosmic in nature in an RPG. These four adventures add to the fabric of the game world very nicely. I wholeheartedly recommend this book for any Vaesen player.

I have been looking for a benefit for magic characters to belong to a seminary of magic in my game world. With additional considerations to existing powers and also new powers, this book fulfills everything I need. Thank You.

Nine Lives to Valhalla

This has to be one of the most absurd role playing games I have seen in a while. However, that absurdity lends itself to being awesome. The cats die but become more powerful each time they die, which makes it hearder to die with glory so you end up in Valhalla. Seriously, there is more PC death in this game than a hardcore game of Paranoia, but the game is worth it. This is something you shoudl download and just play for a night, and include mead. Trust me.

Star Trek Adventures Quickstart

  1. I may be missing the healing rules or they simply are not part of the Quickstart, which confuses me if the latter is the case.
  2. The adventure presented is rather combat heavy. It doesn't feel as much like Star Trek. I guess it would be a good introduction for people who play more combat heavy games but after seeing adventures that are true to Star Trek (e.g. The Living Campaign) I would not recommend the adventure that comes with the Quickstart.

Please understand that this is a review purely of the Quickstart and not the full product.

This is the game that got me into the Powered by the Apocalypse engine. I had tried Dungeon World and a wrestling game and while they were fun to play, they did not scratch the GM itch.

After listening to an Actual Play on Happy Jack's RPG, this game with its conditions and teen superheroes prompted me to finally GM a PbtA game. I think this game is a good starting point for anyone interested in PbtA games.
