World's End Masque & Ball

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Some say the world is ending. At the muddy end of a fruitless harvest, famine and plague stalk the land. The armies of darkness gather on the horizon. And tonight is the night of a lunar eclipse, the time when the astrologers predict a world-devouring evil will be born.

For one group of decadent aristocrats, there is clearly only one possible course of action: lock themselves inside a castle, throw a masquerade, get loaded, and dabble in black magic.

For a group of desperate adventurers, the masquerade is a chance to set things right. But on a night like this, they may get more than they bargained for…

The World's End Masque & Ball is a horrific 'one-shot' adventure for fifth edition. The PDF contains maps, character sheets, monster stats, an NPC generator, and everything else you need to create a night of horror and intrigue without preparation.

Hello ! I intend to run this nice scenario in a couple of weeks. I am eager to see how it will play out. I will probably modify the map of the castle a little, and I had a couple questions :
- Is it normal that the Masked reveller has 13 HP? It seems like a bit much for CR 1/8. It is more than the larval guard, and when you see the number of revellers the adventurers risk to encounter, it feels like it will be a slog to munch through those, and it will probably end badly for the heroes.
- I see that the entry to the entry to the cistern situated in the storage room is completely free to access. How do you handle it if one adventurers goes down there really early and discovers the egg? He cannot hurt it, but he will probably try to warn everybody or something. And what is the point then of the second secret stairs?

Hi Arthur, sorry for the very late response. If you ever got the chance to run the adventure, I'd love to hear how it went! In answer to your questions:

(1) The Masked Reveller has fairly poor weapons and armour and no special abilities. I think they're fine for their CR. If you prefer, you could take off a few HP and give them better weapons instead. Note that all of the fights in this adventure are intended to be a a bit too much for the PCs; this is a horror one-shot, so deaths and/or avoiding fights are expected.

(2) There isn't really an expected order of exploration in this adventure. Players uncovering secrets through investigating is both allowed and expected. As for the secret door, it serves as a hidden method of passing from the castle interior to the cistern, and vice versa.

Hello,

It went really well ! The personal objectives of each character really worked well. BEWARE random reader, spoilers ahead :

The players stuck together up until the very end. Most of them were fighting the cult down in the cistern, and both camp were in pretty bad shape. But the doctor, gravely wounded, was still on ground floor. He snatched the whole box of alchemist fire, and dropped it in the well, charring everyone and everything down there, friends and foes alike, including the egg. It was glorious.

There were so many more NPCs they could have meet during the socializing first part of the game, to uncover more intel, but it had already took a lot of time, and they were eager for action to begin, and basically initiated the hostilities through a missed Stealth roll.

I made a few changes to the adventure, as you'd expect. Mostly :

- I changed the map, and used one of a manor that I found online, which I modified as well. I had to think about...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
