Witness the mighty and terrible face of war in a world of magic!

A critically acclaimed high fantasy adventure path for 5th Edition from veteran authors such as Ari Marmell (Heroes of Horror, Tome of Magic), Wolfgang Baur (Editor DUNGEON® Magazine 1992-1995), Wil Upchurch (Midnight®, Champions of Ruin) and Darrin Drader (Book of Exalted Deeds, Serpent Kingdoms).
The dramatic beginning of the War of the Burning Sky Campaign Saga, The Scouring of Gate Pass kicks off a war of epic proportions as a mighty magical empire marches for conquest. Their first stop is the vital mountain road through the city of Gate Pass, where the PCs, not yet aware of the role they will play in the coming conflict, lie in the path of a military juggernaut.

As Gate Pass falls under attack, the heroes are tasked with delivering critical intelligence out of the city and to a distant safe haven. First, though, they must deal with agents of the invading empire, spies from other nations, avaricious bounty hunters, and deadly inquisitors. The information they carry may decide the fate of this conflict, the War of the Burning Sky.

Welcome to the first adventure in the War of the Burning Sky Campaign Saga. Throughout the course of the campaign saga, a party of heroes will become involved in an escalating war between mighty magical nations, and after many adventures, military battles, and mysterious intrigue, it will be up to them to decide who will emerge victorious and rule in the aftermath.

The Scouring of Gate Pass is the first adventure in the critically acclaimed 12-part War of the Burning Sky adventure path!

As the Ragesian Army maches upon the neutral city of Gate Pass, you must retrieve vital war intelligence from a spy and deliver it to the distant wizards' school of Lyceum.

But first you must find a way out of the besieged city before it falls and the inquisitors, Ragesia's infamous mage-hunting clerics, find you.

Can you survive The Scouring of Gate Pass?

A fantasy adventure for 3rd-level characters.

I have the complete 3e/3.5 and 4e versions of this. Was anything added with the 5e ruleset? Is there ANY reason to get these if I've no plans to run them under 5e?

I shouldn't think so, no. It's the same adventure path, just with 5E rules.

I just finished running a couple campaigns, really want to run WotBS! For strictly reference purposes (as opposed to gameplay), would it be more useful to use 3.5 or 4e material to supplement my 5e game material?
Follow up: Is there a 5e WotBS bundle in the offing?

DTRPG is showing that the File Last Updated: May 24, 2018. Does that mean the errors identified by purchasers on missing text etc have never been corrected?

Unfortunately, yes. I began a significant update on the first adventure a while back, but I have been unable to get the time to complete it just yet.

The following text is missing from page 17, in the Aftermath section:

"On the fourth floor, Rivereye and several guards are tied up and unconscious, with one dead half-orc moved far away, his face burned by the lantern archon’s light ray. If awakened, Rivereye hails the party as his saviors, explains what happened, and tells how he outwitted Larion. He’s sad that Peppin is dead, but begs the party to recover the case and make sure it gets to Lyceum. As part of his job as servant in the imperial palace, Rivereye was placed under a geas by the inquisitors not to talk about what he overheard, but he can say that the case contains information that can’t be lost. If asked, Rivereye can describe the case — black metal, about a foot long and wide, and half a foot deep, made of (he thinks) adamantine, with a lock.

Rivereye says that he overheard the lantern archon talking with three elves, and though he didn’t understand the elves, he understood the celestial — thanks to its...See more

You can get the adventure fully set up with maps (including some not in the PDF), tokens, dynamic lighting, and more on Roll20. You can get just the maps at the best resolution available at wotbsadventurepath.com/maps/

Can anyone provide some background as to why certain info was left out of this edition? I noticed it when I was reading over Rivereye's section. 4e provides info that Rivereye could provide to the PC's that nudges them to the next location. In 5e that information is missing. I had to read through it several times to figure out why the PC's would bother going to the next location, then I found a buddy with 4e and got some much-needed context.

Thank you for pointing this out. A couple paragraphs were inadvertently cut as the section continued on the next page. I will work on getting an update out.

Thank you! I know I tend to struggle with coming up with things on the fly so having those red scripts in the 4e is a huge help. Is there any chance more of those will be brought over as well( i.e the script that follows the PCs taking a rest in the safehouse.)

Yes and no (depends on what you think of the following answer). The read aloud text in the 4e version is usually a repackaging of the descriptive text from the 3.5 version. The 5e version follows the 3.5 version with some additions from the 4e version where it added to the 3.5 story (rather than adding an entirely new story).

Incorporating the read aloud text from the 4e version would have required stripping the duplicated descriptions from the 3.5 version, a process that would have had a high risk of errors. So most of the information is in the 5e version, it just is usually not in a read aloud box.

Oh ok, I understand. I guess I could find a way to take the 4e red text that works for me. I just have to find a way to get my hands on the 4e modules.

Any thoughts about alternativ rules for resting? I find it very hard to imagine a campaign strechtching over month of ingame time when players have their full arsenal of abilities and miraciously full hp every day. Thinking about using "Gritty Realism" boosted with the "rest for the weary" rules from Sterling Vermin, but would love to hear your input on that topic.

You can certainly try, but I think a group using Gritty Realism will struggle with the adventures as written. Gritty Realism is designed to slow down the campaign, and many of the adventures are on a clock to provide a sense of urgency. You could adjust the time scale and would need to decide whether that made sense for the story.

Adventure 1 has the heroes trying to escape Gate Pass in 24 hours before the city falls to the Ragesians.
Adventure 2 provides the heroes with a limited number of Stand the Heat potions to survive the burning forest.
Adventure 3 starts with a wilderness exploration section encompassing 450 miles, some through difficult terrain, taking roughly 3 weeks. It then has some slower time to get to know the city before everything comes to a head.
Adventure 4 has a few overland travelling sections as well. With the action more spread out time-wise for part of the adventure.
Adventure 5 has most of the action is compressed into a few days.

The adventures...See more

Thanks for your input, decided to play it with the usual rules. Any info on when the next chapter is going to release? My group will probably finish the first one during our next session this coming friday. Also, great work with the Gauntlet encounter - was well balanced and really close.

Thank you! Glad it went well. If you liked the product please consider leaving a review when you have the time. :)

Adventure 2 is with the publisher waiting for his approval. He was swamped last week with rolling out the ENnies announcements and associated stuff. I am still looking to keep these coming out roughly monthly.

I don't have a specific title to recommend, but a city adventure or something that could take place in the hills around Gate Pass would be ideal. The end result would be for the new heroes to be noticed and recruited by the Resistance.

The plan is for the adventures to be released monthly. The Fire Forest of Innenotdar is being fine-tuned and should head to the technical reviewers tomorrow. Click "EN Publishing" at the top of the listing and then check the "Follow Your Favorites" box to be notified when the adventures are released.

Cool I'll definitely pick this up then. No chance of me outpacing the release schedule if it's monthly.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
