Spire

The Spire. A towering edifice a mile high and nearly a third wide at its base. This conical spike pierces the fertile soil of a small valley, standing before a narrow pass that cuts through the Perilous Mountains. From a distance the Spire is as black as night, but upon close inspection it is made of dark volcanic glass, seamless. Openings lead inside, to dark levels that rise high, stretching from its Roots and the obsidian tunnels that criss- cross underground, to an interior garden and woodland. Higher still are levels where water is collected from rainfall, feeding a waterfall that waters the woods inside; excess rainfall cascades down the sides of the Spire, pooling around its base to form a small lake and a river that flows down through a gully below.

The Spire is a system-neutral setting/dungeon and settlement set in and around a cone of obsidian that holds dungeon levels reaching up into the sky. This 168-page PDF/book contains an overview of the setting, details of the town and key buildings, details of the Spire itself and the thirteen levels that make up its structure, and notes on factions within the dungeon and town.

Most locations are on two-page spreads, one page holding the map, the other the map text. Some go over several pages, usually 'tables' of loot, information, interesting characters.

There are illustrations, drawn by myself, which are pretty basic, so don't buy this expecting amazing artwork. The fun is in the maps and text, the artwork just adds another dimension to the book.

Other Note: on my website (www.theskyfullofdust.co.uk) I will be, at some point in the future, adding new classes, monsters, stats for the inhabitants of this setting, so keep your eye out for that.

Is the PDF supposed to be significantly more expensive than the hardcover book? Page is currently showing $30.20 for the PDF and $13.77 for the physical book. Combo PDF+book also $30.20, marked down from $30.61.

No, it shouldn't be. I assume this is a glitch after the GM sale. I'll fix it.

I got my copy by following the author on Patreon, so I don't show as a purchaser to review it, but I have read it. First - it's good. The spire itself is a dungeon crawl with a lot of vertical movement. Forster's maps make the product, and are worth the price of admittance alone.

The crypts are full of undead, which is pretty standard, but there's a twist on that, and enough twists on the village around to still make the text worthwhile as well.

The big caveat is that, being systemless, any GM running this will end up statting it themselves. Hopefully as people do so they'll post their results somewhere (as I intend to if I complete it), so we're not all reinventing the wheel.

Thanks for the review :) I'll be posting stuff up on my website for the ACKS-version, eventually, at: www.theskyfullofdust.co.uk

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
