Four Horsemen Blog (February 2017)

It’s Been Slow Down Below

Welcome back to the Four Horsemen Blog, hosted by our friends at Drive-ThruRPG.com! We’re back with some exciting new projects and advice for your fantasy role-playing game. Please join us here on Thursdays for our latest articles and features!

Now, being a neutral evil outsider, I’ve already gone and lied to you. Despite the iconic line from Pantera’s “Cowboys From Hell”, it has not been slow here at Horsemen central. We are killing more PCs than ever before, and for a wide variety of companies. We’re  on the cusp of releasing our biggest Four Horsemen Presents project ever, the Genius Guide to the Talented Bestiary. Our hard work for our publishing partners has paid off huge dividends, such that we are all working various projects, thus our hiatus.

During our time away, we’ve put away adventures, but also strategized a new approach to the blog that allows us to work our busy schedules at an almost reasonable pace. So I’m here to announce that War (Tim Hitchcock) and I will be running the blog with some cool new twists.

First, we’re still going to offer lots of player-themed projects through our friends at Rogue Genius Games. Wi’ll still be keeping monthly themes and listening to fans and fellow players about the fun things we’d all like to see in our fantasy games. To accommodate our schedule outside the blog, we’re not going to attempt to release a new product every single week for a while, but we’ll have multiple products most months, and when a great convergence of schedule occurs, maybe a larger joint project that excites us.

Second, Tim and I will be offering projects from our own devious minds. Remember we are all players and game masters here at Four Horsemen HQ, so we write the things we think players want to play, or GMs want to make their “friends fight”. That won’t change. What will change is that we’re going to scour the landscape for clever harbingers of the Pathfinder design craft and introduce them to you. New talent in our industry is important and we’re going to bring you new voices, new rules, and new ideas to bring to your table.

This is an exciting development in our careers as game designers and developers. Tim and I both entered the industry because we knew friends and fellow players who were successful designers. To go from budding young creature designer to adventure author, developer, and talent scout is a privilege we take very seriously. While we’re not ready to hold open calls for submissions, we are excited to bring you new work from new names we’re sure you’ll enjoy. Each such harbinger has some kind of success under his or her belt already, advancing in Paizo’s RPG Superstar competition, a contributor to a work we labored on or admire, or someone who made an impression with a fantastic debut with one of our publishing partners.

We;re so glad to be back, designing games and offering our thoughts on how to make your Pathfinder or other fantasy RPG a huge success. In celebration that neither player nor GM offer any quarter to their enemies this week. In the words of another favorite metal band, “Kill ‘Em All”.

Next week, War will offer us some thoughts on hybrid class design, and we’ll bring you a very creepy, very fun new hybrid class, the Psychemist!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
