ViewScream, 2nd Edition

ADD TO WISHLIST >

ViewScream is a live-action game designed for play using video-chat or audio-chat software (such as Skype, Google Hangouts, Roll20, or Discord).

NOTE: The game is formatted as a zip file, which contains a 56-page PDF rulebook, 15 adventures in PDF form, 82 PNG overlays (translucent images to alter your appearance when playing via Google Hangouts), and two MP3 files (used with scenarios that have a time limit).

Three to five players assume the roles of desperate people trapped in a world of high-tech horror: crew members going insane aboard a damaged starship; scientists in research labs, hunted by their own creations; or futuristic data-thieves on the run from soulless security drones.

The characters are separated by quantum anomalies, hostile xenomorphs, or tentacled horrors beyond human comprehension -- and they need to work as a team in order to survive. Since they can't reach one another in person, these characters must communicate by using viewscreens throughout the ship (just as the players communicate via video-chat software).

A typical game session lasts 60-90 minutes.

Will you betray your shipmates? Will you work with them, even though some of them may be guilty of horrific crimes? What happened to the rest of the crew? How many minutes do you have before it happens to you, too? Can you escape, or will someone find your mangled corpse floating in the void?

ALSO AVAILABLE -- VIEWSCREAM 2020

Ten new scenarios for ViewScream 2E, including Battleship Carolina (the last flight of a ragtag fleet), Final Voyage of the Gaslight (a bit of steampunk farce), Gates of Flesh, Keys of Bone (body horror in space), and Under the Influencer (a twisted biopunk story).

I´m missing the "ViewScream-reference.pdf" in the zip file. Can it be added?

Is there anything to help with creating your own characters and scenarios? I'm a bit worried about replayability of the scenarios.

Good question! There is a template: a text file that you can fill in when creating your own scenario. It's included with "ViewScream: Distance." Distance is an expansion that includes new scenarios, two of which are audio-only.

This version has a GM (the player controls a character called "Bridge," who serves as a game facilitator). The rules have been tightened up, to make it easier for players to get into character (without tracking individual locations). Also, the game has gone from strictly 4 players to accommodating groups of 3, 4, or 5.

IF I bought the 1st edition, is there enough here to recommend I buy this newer version?

I took too long to answer this (very sorry), but now the game is free, so I say go for it.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
