The content looks to be useful but I do have one complaint. My book looks like it got printed using the ink saver mode on a printer. The printed text is a light grey and frankly strains my eyes looking at it. The introduction, foreword, and table of contents look like they were printed right but I cant say the same for the over 500 pages of content. Anyone else have the same issue?

It sounds like an error happened at the print service. I would recommend reaching out to DriveThruRPG's customer service for a replacement.

Are the creatures covered here different from those in the main monster manual/beastiary book?

Well, the Crawling Under a Broken Moon zine was published over several years before the Twisted Menagerie Manual was. A few creatures did migrate from the zine to the manual (with expanded info) but most of them did not. There is still a lot of material in this zine compilation that has not been republished.

I hope that answers your question. Feel free to ask more questions, if you have them.

Lots of content: will help me build my campaign more efficiently, and will add flavor.

If I read for too long, the gender-exclusive chunks bug me. Though there is an effort at inclusivity, and use of gender-neutral language in much of the text, there are glaring holdouts. Like "Menfish". And the fact that each individual described in that section is actually male. That sort of mistake is harder to make if your proper names & classes are inclusive to start with.

So the text has 44 "she"s and 153 "he"s. Not that I'm counting -- Adobe did it for me!

I'd be grateful if updates & future material from this publisher used the grammatical standard of alternating gender, where gender is used at all. It has the benefit if making the gameworld richer and more consistent as well.

…interesting… though, as a cottage industry zine published w/o an inclusivity/sensitivity team, I’m not surprised.

Knowing that Goodman encourages inclusivity, and offers this book in their webstore, id feel safe enough supporting it, and chalking it up to linguistic fossilization as opposed to intentional shitheelery (my new word)

You might be happy to know, the next edition of the DCC Core book has corrected this… and it has an EROL OTUS cover to boot. Wheeeeeee!

It looks like they added bookmarks, but the bookmarks are currently an unusable mess. *Sigh* Oh well. Lots of content here at least.

Hey Reid, just picked up the CUBM hardcover from Goodman. The print looks like the printer was running out of ink. Grey ink everywhere, no black, fading out to almost nothing in places. Makes it hard to read. Did I get a bad copy or are they all like this? Thanks.

Just picked this up as the DotD, and it may have some truly great material in it, but I can't believe I just paid for a 500+ page pdf with zero bookmarks. Even a decade ago that would be atrocious. Honestly, this is one issue that always makes me wish I could return purchases on DTRPG. Instead, I find myself with another pdf I'll likely never bother delving into because I just don't have the time to wade through it.
Or did I maybe just get a bad download? I tried downloading it a few times, so I don't think so...

It's a compilation of a digest-sized zines. Methinks you're both expecting wayyyyy too much and wayyyyy overestimating the required time investment.

(I'm a verified owner of the original zines, so feel comfortable in commenting.)

Maybe I am, and I admit that multi-subject pdfs without bookmarks are a pet peeve of mine - I think they look unprofessional. So, I own that.

However, for 15 bucks (normal price), I'm still disappointed, and there're other giant pdfs that *are* bookmarked throughout to base my disappointment on.

I do understand how repetitive, annoying and time consuming it can be to bookmark pdfs, but it only needs to be done once, and even just bookmarking the (on average) 5 articles in each unit leaves only about 100 bookmarks.

I think the bookmarking issue should at least be mentioned for the next person, so they know up front. YMMV

So, what all am I getting from this if I already own the survival guide? I’ve never read CUaBM.

While a bunch of material from CUaBM did go on to be revised and updated in the Umerican Survival Guide, a lot did not. Take a look at the PLACES TO GO, THINGS TO KILL section and you will see a bunch of references back to issues of CUaBM that have more detailed info on those locations. Plus there were quite a few character classes that did not get ported over and each issue had new monsters in it.

Are the classes updated to what is in the Survival Guide?

And how is the spine for the PODs? 500 pages is huge for a book that small.

Hi Derek,

Nothing has been updated, other than a combined Table of Contents that now includes specific subject lists (classes, monsters, and locations/adventures). This is just a collection of all 18 issues with no content changes. As for the spine, both the soft and hard cover versions seem solid. I did not have any problems flipping through the proof versions.

Please let me know if you have any other questions,
Reid

Lets say someone new to Umerica is wanting to get into the setting. If they get this, will they have most (around 90% or more) of what's in Umerican Survival Guide and the Twisted Menagerie Manual, or does one need to get this and both of those to really get all the monsters / rules?

I consider Crawling Under a Broken Moon as the basic version of Umerica and the Umerican Survival Guide to be the beginning of the updated, revised, advanced version. There is a LOT of material in the CUaBM Compilation that was NOT incorporated in the Umerican Survival Guide and most of it is compatible with the new stuff. If you only want to get the "current" Umerican rules, I suggest getting the Umerican Survival Guide. If you are a completist, then you will probably want to it all.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
