Seems pretty solid so far. I have not yet been able to run a game with it, but I like what I have seen.

I got the book and the character sheet on the author's website, but downloaded it here, as well, so that I could give this review. I wish this title had more momentum, because I like it better than the alternatives right now. The mechanics make so much sense and it is, at it's root, a lot more powerful than other systems, because it has great formulas for templating and creating, rather than relying too much on pages and pages of bestiary. For those DMs who revel in the world-building and encounter-building experiences, this system is immensely satisfying. For players who would like to just get down to the role-playing and don't like being bogged down with minutia, this system is a dream.

I found this game by sheer luck while surfing RPGnow for inspiring material for running a game. All I have to say is....WOW!

I have always wanted to play and run in D20 games, but the rules formats never "clicked" with me. I always found the various editions of D&D to be far too top-heavy and cumbersome, with rules that are overly-complicated for what (I think) a player needs to play casually, and requiring too many books for a GM to flip through unless they are great at memorizing rules.

But Heroes Against Darkness had me immediately pitching the ruleset to my usual group- and for me to actually DM! It has just the right amount of detail versus accessibility, and I especially love the way that it allows me to easily and quickly build monsters, even for off-the-cuff random encounters. It is a very well put together book, with very nice artwork. And it's free, which is astounding.

The only gripes I had are that the areas of how skills impact the game, and Hybrid class creation, are virtually non-existent. But with some work looking on RPG.Net got me fixed up with some ideas from other fans of the ruleset, along with very positive imput from the author himself.

I would absolutely recommend this game to anyone looking for a good time around a table, and keep up the good work!

I was skeptical at first but upon reading the large 231 page free book I was impressed. A lot of great material and has more than enough to run a long campaign. A lot of flexibility and very easy to understand. It is a throwback to old school games.

If they decided to add more to this line I would download it as soon as it was released.

Pros:

  • Unfathomably flexible
  • Great balance of simplicity and complexity
  • Supports new and veteran players--and GMs--with ease
  • Allows for large groups of players despite its recommendations.
  • Free--as in beer.

Cons:

  • Non-combat skill system is a bit underdeveloped. And by a little I mean very.

Other Thoughts: The price of "free" does not do this product the justice it deserves. I am fairly new as a GM and player, but the world of Roleplaying Games has fascinated me for years, and I've been a part of quite a few playing circles to fuel my hobby as a creative writer. I've seen everything from casual farces to hardcore DnD, (even one very weird pseudo-erotic LARP) and I have never come across a game as fitting for the general player-base as Heroes Against Darkness. The game itself is incredibly flexible, and the GM guide is helpful and spot-on. The game format is simple enough for new players to grasp and the rules are diverse enough for veteran players to enjoy themselves. Rules laid down in the manual play very well in both strict and casual play-groups (I have both), and I'd be willing to venture that it is suitable for nearly any audience a GM might encounter.

Heroes Against Darkness is one the of the slickest free RPGs I have seen yet. Don't let the $0 price tag fool you, this is the full package. This is a game that feels like 0e/1e D&D with a more robust tactical framework and a unified system. I get a feeling that Heroes Against Darkness will appeal to fans of the E6, Fourthcore and people that subscribe to the OSR ethos, but not necessarily the games.

So this is my first ever review of an RPG, for reals!

What could possibly make me want to review an RPG after all these years or gaming? Well it is simple, this game MADE me want to play D&D again... well this version of it anyways.

Heroes Against Darkness is a Neo-Clone (loving this term) or a Fantasy Heartbreaker (I see this term more as a badge of honour) that takes the wide breadth of D&D and pieces together one hell of a fun system!

Now this is not a perfect game by any stretch of the imagination, it has some gaps that are a bit glaring for a more role-player like myself. These gaps are missing classes like the more social ones (Bard) or the straight up Paladin (which is sort of covered by the Hospitaler class), also I think the game could benefit from a Monk and a Druid, for completeness sake. That said, the classes that are there really cover a large amount of options. At face value it is complete enough for old school D&D players.

Justin Halliday wrote this as a labour of love, to be sure, and it shows on every page. The writing is tight and focused, the art is evocative and exciting and the layout is excellent. Especially for a layout done in Word... wow! I would never attempt to layout a whole game in Word, or at least I wouldn't have previously, but now I see the power of it.

The thing that I liked most of all was the incorporation of a pseudo-4e Power mechanic for each class as well as a hybridized almost Magic The Gathering style for spellcasters. Together this really hits the spot for me, though it does make house creating character classes a bit of work as you need to balance out their new powers.

Another nice thing is that while mapping isn't necessary, it is really a lot of fun with the way the rules work. So much so that my group played out a map combat, and we are NOT mappers by any stretch, and LOVED it!

Character creation is deep and involved, plenty of narrative options are in this section, including a cute 7 deadly sins/7 blessed virtues option which is very cool.

There is a nicely sized monster manual in it, treasure and a truckload of GM advice and tools to make your campaign even better.

Best of all though is the price... FREE!

That's right, you get a FULL game that is fast and a load of fun to play with out paying 1 single penny.

Now if we can get a community going, that might lead to some fan creations (I've already done a Knight Class) of classes, new powers/spells and maybe some monsters too!

So in summation, this is worth the price of admission and even gives you more value than some games that you pay $20+ for. Check it out, give it a read and maybe even take it out for a spin or two. Trust me, if you like fast paced, less complicated stuff, this game does not disappoint!

Cheers!
