Far Away Land Adventures: Peril of the Purple Parrot
by Bob V. G. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/24/2022 07:28:25

Recently I soloed my way through Peril of the Purple Parrot (16 pages at DriveThruRPG for free) an adventure for Far Away Land RPG. The RPG system I used to play it was Mork Bork Barebones Edition (76 pages available for free at itch.io ). The Negligent Necromancer class came from DriveThruRPG. I soloed this with the FlexTale Solo Adventuring Toolkit. Well, my first attempt at this was short. My necromancer failed all of his attempts (four failed rolls). He died when his spell was not cast properly.

So, I rolled up my second necromancer, Max. Max has one hit point. I knew this was going to be a disaster. Max started his day by summoning two zombies. He already had an ooze named Foop. Max was surprised when an airship crashed near him. He looked up and saw a floating island. He was not able to fix the crashed ship. At this point, another ship lands. A repair guy starts fixing the broken ship and Max starts a long conversation with the pilot. The pilot says that Manaia the scientist would love to have his two zombies. The pilot then gives Max and his zombies a ride to the floating island. Foop had to stay below, he does not get along with metal. The pilot then escorts Max to Manaia. She takes the zombies and dismisses Max. Two guards escort the two zombies to the stairs leading down. Instead of leaving the building, Max goes back to the main hall. He starts a conversation with the cook Clinkle Toes. Toes hates his job. Max offers to help, so they go to the kitchen and prepare lunch and later dinner. After dinner, Max offers to do all of the cleanup and sends Toes away. At midnight, Max comes out of the kitchen and he hears two guards playing cards in the armory. He takes the stairs down and starts exploring. He finds loot : jars of acid, copper ingots, two syringes, and alchemicals. He uses one jar of acid to free his two zombies from their holding cell. The three of them head up the stairs, exit the building, and go over to the airship. They take off in the airship and start heading down. Unfortunately, one of the zombies did not follow the safety instructions and fell out of the ship. It died when he had an encounter with the ground below. Max then flew the ship to the nearest city and sold all of his loot including the airship.

Wow. He survived his first 24 hours. How long will his luck last? Give this adventure a try!

Far Away Land RPG: Tome of Awesome

Far Away Land is a fantastic book that doesn't take itself too seriously. If you are looking for a fun, light-hearted game with rules for kingdom building, montaging, and killing dragons, this is the book for you.

Far Away Land RPG: Tome of Awesome
by Matthew B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/29/2018 23:17:16

I have to admit, the art hooked me. It's deceptively simple, cartoonish, and gonzo in all the right ways. The core mechanic is a simple die pool built from attributes and skills. Character generation is completed in a few simple steps. There are no classes (wonderful). Players can essentially make whatever type of character they wish.

Although the setting is full of odd species, it's assumed that PCs are human. With that said, there is a section in the back which provides rules for playing non-human characters. I wish that this section was included in the character creation chapter, but this is a minor quibble.

When you consider the art, the setting, and the rules, it should come as no surprise that this is a game that doesn't take itself very seriously. Regardless, there is a solid system here, as well as a unique, madcap world to explore.

FYI, Simian Circle Games just Kickstarted a new version of Far Away Land. There's tons of new art, rules clarifications, etc.. Although this is a great book, keep you're eyes open for the new version.

I pledged $45 for a hardcover copy of the Tome of Awesome after I bought the original.

Far Away Land RPG: Core Rules (delete)
by Jose F. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/02/2016 00:50:53

Fantastic little game. The author calls it fantasy heartbreaker-esque but it's not as it doesn't resemble D&D at all. It has simple rules which make sense and intentionally vague definitions to harken back to the old school days. The art has a wonderfully unique style too but don't be too fooled by it, it may be a little frightening for younger children.

Far Away Land RPG: Quick Start Rules
by Vik S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/15/2016 13:54:31

I just shared it on my facebook with the following blurb; Looking for some quick play fantasy? Maybe some quick adventures for your favorite Old School RPG (or even New school if you are into that kind of thing)? Check out Far Away Land Adventures by Simian Circle Games. I just stumbled onto their collection of offerings on Drivethru, and I am very impressed.

The modules are direct and easy to digest. With interesting encounters and dungeon rooms. You can either use the Fast Play system by Simian Circle, or just port the modules over to your favorite fantasy game system with very little effort. They even provide a full collection of printable fold up tokens, lots of goblins and zombies, plus harpies, golems, adventurers and much more. As I said, I was really impressed. And that's just the free stuff!

They offer 13 modules, a large set of tokens, and Fast Play rules all for free. If you like it, throw them a dollar a book. I would like to see this stuff keep coming. I am sure you will too.

Far Away Land RPG: Quick Start Rules
by Fred D. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/17/2015 13:20:55

Far Away Land is a role-playing game full of unique art that catches the eye (unless it doesn't for you), and novel rules that have that old school, rules-lite feel, but use different mechanics, so this is not a clone, folks. This is a re-imagined fantasy role-play experience that is both comfortably familiar and freshly new. The art, done by the author, or other-way-around, the rules, written by the artist really pulls me into the world of Far Away Land where I want to create my own experience inside the game. There are a lot of role-play games out there and many are a rehash of what some of us have been playing for many decades now, but Far Away Land takes me to a place I haven't been to before, a place that frankly makes me smile. This game, based on rolling a number of d6s and keeping the highest score, may not be the perfect fit for everyone, but it definitely isn't what we have come to expect in a fantasy role-play game. Far Away Land is a new experience in the frp gaming hobby, and I am liking it. The Quick Start Rules offers a complete game, but there is even more Far Away Land available. S get your appetite primed with the Quick Start Rules and then really dive in with the Tome of Awesome which combines all the titles in the Far Away Land system into one awesome book, yeah! Count me among the fans that have allowed the Tome of Awesome to take me to a Far Away Land of fun and adventure!

Far Away Land RPG: Quick Start Rules

I would give it to a beginner and then switch him to a different system once he grasps the basic ideas. While simple and easy to use, it is too one of a kind to really use other adventures etc. without massive rewrite.

-This game is incomplete and toolboxy. -There are no rules for creating Non-Human characters. This was my biggest disappointment. -Many spells are given fluff descriptions with no game effect -Many rules are unclear. -Many rules are unbalanced. -Not worth $8. I got it on sale for $5.60 and it wasn't worth that IMHO. +Cool artwork. +Good special abilities(for creatures) section that I will adapt to other systems.

Deceptively cute, the game sports a streamlined system that promotes flexibility and creativity of the GMs and the players ala. OSR style games. As a person who feels swamped by myriads of rules, this game is awesome. I'm even planning on busting out this game for some role playing newbies....and they're not kids!

Far Away Land RPG: Tome of Awesome
by Kevin B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/17/2015 17:40:13

It would be easy to hate Dirk Stanley. He's that guy that walks into the room, that does everything you do, only a million times better. He's probably a pretty cool guy, to boot. And that would just make him hate you more. Far Away Land is not a game that everyone is going to embrace: it's too unique for that. But in the context of what it does, it does everything right. Let's start with the art. This book is worth the price of admission simply as a collection of great fantasy art. Stanley manages to conjure up Tom Wham, Matt Groening, and Scott McCloud all at the same time. The art might be jarring and not correct for a darker game, but it is perfect for this. The tone of the game is light hearted high adventure. This feels a lot like the early, heady days of TSR. Imagine walking into a bungalow where Tom Wham and James Ward have been on a blackout drunk designing a game...pages everywhere...and when you put them together, it's a lot like this. The rules lite approach allows him to cram his core rules, optional rules, side games, Monster Manual, and Deities and Demigods into one set of covers, with room left over for the world itself with more detail than E. Gary Gygax put into the first edition of Greyhawk. In hand, this book is small but gorgeous. It says Tome of Awesome right on the cover, and it is that.

Game design is a quiet art, without a lot of real world accolades and one of the smallest target audiences one can labor to please. It would be easy to hate Dirk Stanley for being so damned brilliant, but let's not do that. Instead, if ever we see this guy at a panel or onstage at a con, let's stand up and shake the rafters. Ladies and Gentleman, I give you Mr. Dirk Stanley....

Far Away Land Adventures: Pawns and Knights
by Luke W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/01/2015 13:58:46

Unlike the previous adventure offerings, Pawns and Knights provides a mini-campaign starter for the FAL GM. There is a map and details of Londol, as well as an initial hook by way of working for a dubious pawnbroker called Mus Sak. If you need a first stepping stone into the world of FAL, but unsure what that might be, P&K is well worth the look.
