Welcome to the edge of civilization, where brigands rule and where the shadows are long.

Five Leagues From the Borderlands is a set of solo miniatures rules for fantasy campaign games.

Taking inspiration from gritty "medieval-fantasy" like The Black Company and Harn, this is a world of brutal combat and ever-present danger.

With a handful of miniature figures, your dice and these rules, you can adventure in the war-torn Borderlands, fight tactical battles against evil and hopefuly get a few coins in the process.

Your characters will advance as you go along, find loot and might even make it to the end.

Five Leagues is a descendent of the Five Parsecs series of games, offering a game experience written specifically for Solo Players:

That means that all the mechanics you need are built right into the rules, instead of being an afterthought stuffed in the back of the book.

We've aimed to make the mechanics simple and straight-forward, to make it easier and quicker to play on your own.

And the adventure and encounter tables will do pretty much all the set-up for you.

* * *

Please be advised this is a tactical game: You will need miniatures, tokens, markers or something else to represent your characters in combat.

A typical battle will have 8-10 figures on each side.

This game is intended for Solo players, though it can easily be played with a friend: Just split the party between you and enjoy adventuring together!

* * *

This is a complete game: You get character creation rules, encounter rules, a town action system and mechanics for factors such as Luck, Will and Story Points to tailor your game.

Players interested in a more open-ended group game may wish to also check out Dungeon Scum, available from Nordic Weasel Games.

Please note that this is NOT a dungeon crawling game, its a game of tactical fantasy action.

I've just posted a bunch of fan-made stuff for 5 Leagues in the files section of the SoloWarGame yahoo group. Mostly encounter variants and a campaign game roster sheet. I believe you'll have to join the group to download it. I made it for my own use, but hopefully others will enjoy it as well.

Do I need to purchase the 3rd edition of the FiveCore rules as well to make this work? Thanks

Thank you. I’ve just stumbled across your offerings and am super intrigued! Just getting back into gaming so it will be solo for awhile for me.

At this point, I think we have a little bit for everybody.
Most titles include solo mechanics, though some are more basic and some are more fully featured in that regard.

Don't be afraid to ask questions and I hope you have some fun gaming hours ahead of you, regardless of what systems you end up picking.

(If this is a double post I apologize I think the site ate my question)

Will we ever see rules introducing Mounted units into this game? I bought this with the plan to put my Saga & Middle Earth collections to good use however I have pretty sizeable amounts of Rohan and Norman Cavalry troops and am unsure of how to introduce such units into the warbands without breaking the game.

I imagine it would be easy enough just to treat them as foot soldiers on bigger bases with more speed and an allergy to spears and have so many per number of troops similiar to how Archers are handled to hold me over till then.

Another great product by the way. You never disappoint!

Thanks!

Yeah, your suggestions are about on target. Maaaaaybe have an option to be dismounted, ala GW's LOTR rules.

There's a few areas I'd like to add: Horses are one, some magic is another, the trick is that they will of course need to be available both to our heroes and to the enemies.

I might do a "Land of the horselords" expansion putting the warband in a Rohan-like region and work it in that way.

Appreciate the kind words and questions.

Any chance of releasing a magic system for these campaign rules? I already own Dungeon Scum and have ported over the magic system to Starport Scum, but these campaign rules fire my imagination even more!

Glad you like it Heather!
I have some thoughts on how to do magic, but I am still tinkering with getting it "right" as far as feeling like it fits in the atmosphere we have going.

I've been enjoying this a lot, currently around campaign turn 30 for Dark Woods of Winter. However, I can't find the expected dimensions of the playing field or how much terrain to use. Assuming a 3'x3' table, the combatants generally set up surprisingly far from the table edge. With my preference for incredibly dense terrain this works, but I'm curious what you envisioned by design.

Yikes, sounds like a long term campaign! Mind sharing your war band ?

I tend to play on a space between 2x2 and 3x3 feet with pretty dense terrain. I do prefer setting up "in the table" rather than near the edges, so you are seeing some of that. I find that being to move backwards a bit can be a nice option.

I hope that helps? I agree, it should have been clearer in the book.

Very nice! I like the changes from Five Parsecs.
Will there be more supplements after Dark Woods of Winter?

Thanks!
I am working on a mini campaign that will introduce goblins to the world but in a suitably threatening manner.

It may be a little bit though, since there's some other projects in the way first.

Excellent. I love goblins as sinister lurking fae instead of as little running XP packages for 1-3rd level adventuring parties.

With a bit of luck, they should be pretty mean. They will still be pretty squishy of course, but they should present some tense moments for sure.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
