Shadows of Forgotten Kings [5e]

the-city-vignette.jpgA Fifth Edition adventure for level 3 characters.

The villages on the edge of the jungle used to be wealthy: they gathered fruits and exotic hardwoods from within the jungle and sold them as wines and furniture to regular merchant caravans in exchange for grains and other staples.

But caravans do not make it through anymore. A handful of tattered survivors have made it back to the city and reported being assaulted by wave after wave of panthers that would attack, retreat, and attack again in replenished numbers. The merchant houses want their lucrative route back. The villages need grain and supplies; their people cannot live forever scavenging fruit and huddling by their hearths in fear every night.

Tales lead deeper into the jungle - to the ruins of an ancient empire fallen to a terrible curse.

This Fifth Edition adventure is written by Zzarchov Kowolski (Thulian Echoes, Scenic Dunnsmouth, A Thousand Dead Babies, The Gnomes of Levnec, etc), illustrated by Chris Huth (Ashen Stars, Call of Cthulhu Investigator Handbook, Night's Black Agents, 13th Age Glorantha, etc), and mapped by Dyson Logos (Waterdeep - Dragon Heist, Circle of Hands, Dyson's Delves, etc). It will work with most campaign settings as long as the adventurers are near (or can be brought near) a large mostly uncharted forest or jungle.

Is an OSR version planned and if not how difficult would it be to convert to an OSR game like Labyrinth Lord or Swords and Wizardry if one isn't familiar with 5e?

A conversion to other systems isn't planned at this time, as this was specifically an effort by Zzarchov to make an old school feeling adventure within the constraints of the 5e system.

That said, conversion should be pretty easy - I was able to run a 5e adventure using B/X D&D with only a few minutes work back before I got really familiar with 5e. But obviously experiences with conversion will differ.

How much time would you say it took? Is it for a few sessions or a long oneshot?

Depending on how much of the ruins the party decides to explore, it should last at least two sessions, possibly significantly more with a very inquisitive and yet timid group.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
