The Mist Walker - 5e Class

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Introducing the Mist Walker — a new Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition base class by Youtube creator Taking20.

Looking for a new class to play? A highly mobile and cunning warrior, the Mist Walker is designed specifically to give you an exciting feel in and out of combat with just the right amount of options to be creative in your approach. The Mist Walker is an intelligence-based combatant that will breathe life into encounters in thrilling fashion.

Designed by Youtube content creator Cody C. Lewis of Taking20, the Mist Walker has been put through multiple phases of playtesting, both live on stream with the help of Web DM, Nerdarchy & Encounter Roleplay and with the help of the Taking20 Patron community, coupled with some incredible art by the talented D&D 5e artist Kim Van Deun, to bring us this final version.

The Mist Walker is a complete D&D 5e class with three full archetypes, called convictions, that will give players plenty of options when creating and playing their characters; the Conviction of the Blade, the Conviction of the Mind, and the Convction of the Shroud. Each of these will give players and Dungeon Masters a distinct feel, to help them create that one of a kind experience.

'This new, mysterious cool power called The Mist'...

Um... Ravenloft much?!

Authors, please pick one:
A) This was balanced and designed for use in Ravenloft
B) This would break Ravenloft open like an eggshell and leave the DM whimpering like of a baby whale grounded on a beach-head

This class has significant issues with balance, specifically related to its broken movement system, near immunity to opportunity attacks, and d10 hit dice combined with both access to shields and a large number of spell like abilities that are save-or-suck. In any game where this class is allowed, this is the correct and only class to take.

Quick question, as we all know, in 5e there is no "attack from behind" mechanics, as if you try to attack from behind, your opponent would just turn around, following your movement. But if you mistwalk behind him, should it give you advantage? I mean, if it does, a mistwalker/rogue could become deadly.
Also, based on what Dustin T said, a mistwalker 1/bladesinger2/rogue X could possibly break the game. Add to that casting shield spell, wich gives you +5 to AC and your DM might end up killing your whole party just by trying to hurt you a little.
Am i missing something?

Very fun product. Question about mechanics. Is ita bit broken to add blade song with the int based unarmored defense. 20 int = 20 ac before dex and spells get applied. Am I doing something wrong here?

16 dex 20 int with just a level 1 dip gives 23 AC teleportation blade singer.

So, I'm a little confused on how Mist Walk actually works, in terms of my movement. Say I am a tabaxi, can I move my full 30 movement and then Mist Walk? And take it a step further, can I move my full 60 from my feline agility and mist walk? Or am I supposed to choose between Mist Walking or Regular Movement?

Rob2e can do the conversion for fantasy ground. I would live to play it!

Very cool class, purchased it for a homebrew set in a cloudy mountainous region and I'm really looking forward to exploring!

This is a cool class, and has a flavor I can see a lot of my players getting behind. I haven't gotten to the later levels, but I have a couple concerns. I personally don't understand why they are conceptually beefier than a monk, which has a d8 hit die. I think this class feels more appropriate in line with Rogue/Monk in terms of their resillience.

I also believe that Methodical Strikes should just given advantage. It's a clean and easy way to make a move more effective without breaking bounded accuracy.

Really liking the look of this, and may well let my players use it in my next campaign (need to check it won't "break" anything major in the campaign first etc)

Would it be possible to get a "Printer Friendly" version too?

Idk if anyone noticed, but just in case you didn’t there’s a typo on page 10 on Vampiric Transference. It says “ain hit points” instead of I think “gain”. Just in case the author sees this and didn’t notice. Also cool class btw

Is there a Fantasy Grounds module made for this already like with the bundle for the Deathseer, Pale Master, and Vicar?

I have a question about the Misty Escape ability. It says you mist walk to the nearest unoccupied square up to half your mist walk distance. Does this mean that if you have an unoccupied space next to you, you must go there? Or is it supposed to read that you mist walk up to half your mist walk distance to an unoccupied space?

The difference being in the first case, it must be there nearest space (player choosing if there are multiple options?) that is within half your M.W. distance and, in the second case, that you can M.W. anywhere unoccupied within 1/2 M.W. distance?

Also, cool concept by the way. I'm looking into making a villain for my players with this class. Feel it would be really unique for them and throw a curve-ball for them.

I think the idea is that the movement is involuntary. As in, you move to the absolute closest unoccupied spot that is outside the area of effect. So if your mistwalk distance is 40, and you are 5 feet from the edge of the spell effect, you only mistwalk 5 feet away to the spot outside the effect range. You don't get to go anywhere you want in 20 feet.

Hi, i got a question about a mechanic here.

Upon reaching 5th level in this class, you can additionally teleport up to half of your Mist Walk
Distance if you have used your Mist Walk ability as part of your move action this turn, or your full Mist Walk Distance if you have not, as a Bonus Action.

So if i understand this correctly i can mist walk for my full movement and after this i can as a bonus action move for an extra 1/2 full movement?

At 20th lvl this would mean 120ft mist walk with your move+bonus action if i'm right?

Here's my review of the class as someone who likes to implement Homebrew across his campaigns.

Level 1: Mist Walk - This ability is on the stronger side of the power curve, it would help if it was clarified in the feature that only you can move through it. Otherwise players might interpret it so that you can take allies, I know that there is a subclass that clarifies this, but it's better to be safe than sorry. RAW vs RAI and all that.
Level 1: Unarmored Defense - Nothing inherently wrong with this, I'm just curious why you chose to do unarmored defense instead of medium armor?
Level 2: Fighting Style - You mentioned in the class description about how some Mist Walkers choose to use a bow, but you don't offer the archery fighting style. Is there a reason for this?
Level 2: Shroud - Nothing wrong with this, it's flavorful and I like how it works.
Level 3: Methodical Strikes - Due to the way that bounded accuracy works in 5e, this is a very potent ability, in the theme of 5e...See more

Definitely know im not going to pay for a class that i cant try out first. Tree fiddy is a steep order considering im the DM and there dont appear tbe any games that i can be a player for on the horizon. Of course i and anyone else who planned to not pay initially could always come back and do so later which was my plan if i liked it. As it stands i will probably ignore their published content if they do so again and might even unsubscribe from their youtube. Ending it early has put a very sour taste in my mouth.

If they want to XXX about losses then maybe they shouldn't have forked out for art like paizo does for their free content.

You'll be pleased to know that I'm still subscribed on youtube. But that is the danger you're going to have to assume will happen with a 'pay what you want' option.

Are people going to pay nothing? Yes. Was I going to? Yes. Do they often not pay later? Yes.

I know these are just words but i did fully plan to pay for the class if i ever wound up using the class. But i do have to go over homebrew content before allowing it. If I found it to be too imbalanced i would have not opted to pay for it. This is what in my opinion is the true strength of "pay what you want" options.

I remember in my youth the freeware and shareware games that you could try for a bit before committing to it. I know a lot of people are opposed to DRM but i really feel like PDFs that dont allow printing could be a good middleground. I have no idea if it's a thing.

I don't have any dog in this fight, but I do have to tell you, the _vast majority_ of people who pay $0 down on a PWYW title never come back to rebuy it. Fewer than 1 in 10 from the numbers I've heard from other authors/publishers, and further down on this page it looks like for this product fewer than 1/2 a percent paid anything for it. If 99.5% don't ever give a penny for it, why leave it PWYW?

Well by that logic the Gold/platinum bestseller tag on it is completely disingenuous, as it was there the second they switched it off of pwyw.

The best seller tags are not subjective. They are purely math driven and you can locate them in the top right corner on every product here on DriveThruRPG, if they have in fact earned them.

We are thrilled that the Mist Walker has gone platinum (top .96% of all products in the history of DriveThru), and that people chose to support the product beyond the initial PWYW surge.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
