Phase Abandon

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Any genre. Any power. The only limit is your imagination.

Phase Abandon is a narrative-based GM-less RPG that’s easy to set up and run with a minimum of prep time. Character creation is streamlined, taking only ten minutes from start to finish, letting you get right into the meat of the game. Character equipment, powers, and skills are all handled through the same system, making them easy to understand and implement.

Mechanics are all effects-based, allowing them to be adapted to any genre and play style. Players can spend resources to add setting details, allowing the campaign to fit the players’ preferences no matter what they are. Narration duties shift naturally, with chip bidding allowing players to take control of the narrative and systems in place to ensure that all players get a chance to shape the story.

To Alcon,

Looks interesting, and it is a gift horse, but I'm loathe to commit time to a system that starts off with a basic mechanic where you have a dice pool, where each die has a 50/50 chance to be a success or a failure; on the face of it, that's kinda pointless, as no matter how many dice you have, it doesn't change the fact that each die is basically a coin flip, and no matter how many dice you roll, it's basically still a coin flip.

I get that there may be other rules that make this not pointless, but for future reference you may want to state why this is, clearly, and up front, for the more mathematically skeptical.

Again, it looks interesting, but investing time into something that may very well be fundamentally flawed is not something prudent want to do.

I'm writing this because this game seems quite unique in intent, and I'd like to see it or like to succeed, and for good authors of good games to get paid for their labours.

Perhaps you...See more

Thanks for the feedback.

As you stated, The odds are generally 50 /50.
More dice = greater risk or reward. It's more about how much the character is willing to risk to get a task done than it is about the pass fail nature of the roll.
The use of chips and some dice manipulation can skew the odds a bit, but the general premise is the same.
The PVP concept you put forth is quite good and has come up a few times over the years.

There are are ways for something to be risky than just a pass fail result.

Okay? Either way, I don't see your system doing much more than complicating the math of a coin toss.

It isn't about the math of a single coin toss, which, as you say, remains 50-50... at first! As a character progresses, the ability to re-roll changes the math, as does "exploding" 6s.

However, the risk a player has to manage is not a mathematical risk, but a perceived risk of loss. The resources that you character loses are finite. The choice to bet on the coin toss is not always yours and can be imposed on you by other players. If you are "almost dead," you might not want to wager your last HP on a 50-50 bet.

Here is a silly analogy semi-inspired by the real world. If a rational person had $1000 and was offered a double or nothing chance based on a coin toss, the rational person would be willing to pay up to $500 for the chance. However, if you only had $1000 in the bank, rent of $800 due tomorrow and payday two weeks away, you might think twice about your double or nothing lotto ticket.

This example is not to begin a discussion of economics or...See more

. I don't see how he can be, and we can conflate principle-based views with reductionism all day long, but an honest reader can infer that this game is long on untested theory and short on fact.

However, if you like your uncertainty in the mechanics themselves, in addition to their application, then more power to you.

And, again, it's not like he's trying to charge people money for it.

Either way, even IF what you and the author says is true, "somehow," if you want this to take off, then you have to change your presentation. It beggars belief to think that I'm the only one that would have low confidence in this, such as it is.

I like what seems to be the intent, but the execution is sketchy, at best.

It's now getting a little pushy "in here," so forgive me if I no longer respond. We all love our monkeys, and I get it.

I don't love your monkey, okay?

I'll grant that the emperor isn't completely...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
