As featured on Forbes.com and having raised over $90K on Kickstarter & CrowdOx, ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG is a bloodier, grimmer and grittier version of classic tabletop role-playing games you may already familiar with. The community calls this style of gaming the “pathetic aesthetic”, but we simply call it grim & perilous gaming.

WHAT IS ZWEIHÄNDER?

ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG is an OSR Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay loveletter/retroclone/heartbreaker released under Creative Commons License Share-Alike. It is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game, one where adventurers will:

  • Live in a gritty, ‘realistic’ fantasy world
  • Make morally grey decisions & enact vicious reprisals
  • Uncover insidious plots & political intrigue
  • Desperately fight in clandestine & open field combat
  • Defend themselves from injuries, madness & mutations
  • Take part in heart-pumping chase scenes
  • Venture into the wilderness & survive its perils
  • Encounter sanity-blasting creatures & their minions

Using the classical D100 system, you will create grim characters, write perilous adventures and build low fantasy & dark fantasy campaigns. These rules are perfectly suitable to run Renaissance and medieval-styled adventures, too. You can also use this book to craft homebrew stories set in the works of Andrzej SapkowskiGeorge R.R. MartinGlen CookScott Lynch and other ‘grimdark’-inspired worlds.

This 692 page, all-in-one game includes most of what you need to play: a character creation guide, game mastery rules and a bestiary brimming with creatures both fair & foul. All that’s left to gather are a few friends, pencils and a handful of dice.

ZWEIHÄNDER awaits, and the fate of your grim & perilous tale hangs in the balance!

I think that there might be something wrong with the pdf file. It always fails to download. I have re-tried several times now, but it always fails at around 10% of the download. I have no problems downloading any other pdf that I have purchased on Drivethru RPG, only this one.

Our PDFs are all sent through Distiller, and are optimized for hosting & downloading. Some folks have luck downloading to DropBox, or by using the old interface (clickable in 'My Library'). Unfortunately, you may have to reach out to customer support. Wish there was something else we could do to help!

I was able to solve my downloading issue by switching to Microsoft Internet Explorer. It would seem that the problem was that Firefox was causing the download error for some reason. If other people have this problem in the future, it might be worth suggesting that they try switching to Microsoft Internet Explorer to complete the download.

I have been following this for some time, and had the early beta version. As a player of Warhammer 1e back in the day (and a little 2e...and hater of 3e), I found this to be a fantastic evolution of the game. I couldn't resist picking this up. I will hopefully get in on the hardcover as a late pledge come payday.

Friends keep telling me I should try "gritty and edgy" RPGS.
But I got to ask before putting my 5 dollars on the table.
Is there ANY room for Honor, Decency, Kindness, Heroism and Hope in this Dark RPG (like there is in Werewolf the Apocalypse and Warhammer 40K: Deathwatch) or does the characters you play have to be a heartless child-raping sociopaths who cackles with a wine in one hand and a whore in another as fields innocent people are nailed to and burnt at stakes, like every character in that pointlessly black-hearted and cynical HBO waste of time snuff film series pretending to be (and FAILING to be) "Soprano meets Lord of the Rings"
Thanks!

From the book:

This is not a story of good versus evil, but about truth and consequences. It is a world cast in many shades of grey between rare extremes of black and white. Short-term solutions are likely to have more harmful consequences in the long run, but deals with what must be done now. Sacrifices must be made to realize a brighter outcome. The necessary means to achieve order and balance requires tough decision-making on the part of the players.

However, ZWEIHÄNDER is not a game of violence for the sake of violence. In a grim & perilous world, death means something. However, compassion, forgiveness and sacrifice mean something greater, for only they can overcome the pessimism, disillusionment and depravity that pervades and threatens society. This is a world where cynicism and disintegration of society (chaos) is pitted against idealism of a better tomorrow (order). These two principles often blend together, feeding off one another in an eternal tug of war where there is...See more

Dark and gritty doesn't mean "evil characters campaign", it just means that life is exceptionally hard and dare I say it, grim, for the characters. It makes the heroics of high fantasy incredibly difficult and improbable...but not impossible. And unlike most fantasy games, this genre takes into account mental trauma and that wading into battle, or worse yet, facing "Things Man Wasn't Meant to Know" can drive someone insane. Knowing your kind and good hero could (and probably will) end up physically disabled AND mentally crippled is a bit daunting but is what makes the genre fun for those that dig it. It's the consequences of adventuring that make it so exciting. Often in the old Warhammer 1e days, I found that I had great adventures in actually trying to AVOID adventure. Haha. My gamemaster and I had many laughs over those sessions, because my character, a disenchanted university student with a desire to see the world, was solo traveling across the Old World with only his skill at drinking...See more

I was wondering the same thing. This has been the Deal of the Day five times since May 25.

May 25: $13.50 (50% off of $27.00)
June 23: $13.50 (50% off of $27.00)
July 10: $13.50 (50% off of $27.00)
July 17: $10.00 (50% off of $20.00)
July 25: $5.00 (50% off of $10.00)

Since July 10, it seems to be the “deal of the week” with an ever-shrinking price. [grin]

Daniel F., thanks for making this a better deal for folks with the price reductions. I bought mine during an early Deal of the Day. This is not a request for any refund of the difference in the price from then to now.

DriveThruRPG, you might want to check your random function.

One casual observation I would add is that there are oftentimes less than 20-odd products in queue for the Deal Of The Day. It costs a lot of Publisher Points to get it into queue, and I feel strongly that larger publishers are oftentimes unwilling to cut their prices while smaller publishers cannot afford to get into the queue because of the Publisher Point cost.

Due to printer issues, the Kickstarter print versions are only going to be shipped at August at the earliest. I expect the POD version to be available after the Kickstarter backers have received thier physical versions, so later in the year would be my guess. Enjoying the book so far, but the bookmarks are kind of crazy. For example, steps 5-9 of character creation are *within* "Warrior", which itself is directly under "Character Creation" but should specifically be under "Archetype and Profession." ("Archetype and Profession, meanwhile, is nested under "Elf.")

I haven't noticed any problems in the text itself, but a small update getting the bookmarks in order would be much appreciated!

Daniel, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but comparing the V4 files with the errata you posted on the site, it seems the Index listing for the Fomori Thrall hasn't been fixed as there are still two mentions of Fomori Huscarl instead. Not a huge problem and doesn't bother me personally, but just wanted to let you know in case you can still fix the file before submitting it for print. :)

Also only able to see one file, in my DTRPG Library it's called "Zweihander_Book_DIGITAL_150dpi.pdf". I've just downloaded it, and the file is downloaded as "ZWEIHANDER_Grim_&_Perilous_RPG_(FULL_VERSION)_([my personal file ref]).pdf". Checking the latest errata online, I can confirm that this file does include the changes to v4.
So yeah, just wanted to confirm that v4 150 dpi has uploaded properly, but not the 300 dpi one.

As of 8/14/17 + 8/15/17, none of the files uploaded are correct. I went to download, using the errata page (here: https://grimandperilous.com/errata), and *BOTH* the 150 DPI files, and *BOTH* the 300 DPI files still show incorrect information according to the errata info. Example: page 509, Chimera entry. The damage threshold does not reflect the "13 (19/25/31)" as per the errata page, instead reflecting the old "8 (14/20/26)".

Also, it's EXTREMELY confusing which set of files to download, since there aren't any version indicators in the file name (like V4, V5, etc). There are two sets of 150 dpi files, and two sets of 300 dpi files, and none of them are reflecting the updated errata info.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
