Dispatches from the Raven Crowking Volume 3

Welcome to Dispatches from Raven Crowking’s Nest Volume III. Pull up a chair, set your drink near your hand, and let’s talk. That’s pretty much what this is. Chatting about games in general, and Dungeon Crawl Classics in particular.

As the name implies, Dispatches has its genesis in my blog, Raven Crowking’s Nest. Dispatches has a few advantages over the free blog versions of the same material. First off, the material has been re-edited, cleaned up, and in some cases expanded. Secondly, and perhaps most importantly, it is in print so that you can keep it on your gaming shelf. Finally, Dispatches will contain some new material as well…a “thank you” for your continued interest!

I have opinions – lots of them! – but I’m going to dispense with the “IMHO”s and “IME”s, and assume that you, the Gentle Reader, are smart enough to know that I am talking about my own opinions and experiences. And, if I am wrong in that assumption, feel free to tell me so!

This volume focuses on articles related to creating sandbox environments. Although these articles use the excellent Dungeon Crawl Classics system, the general principles are adaptable to almost any game system.
This volume includes:
  • What is a Sandbox
  • Why System Matters
  • Recommendations
  • Initial Set Up For Sandbox Games
  • Initial Base of Operations
  • An Interesting Outdoor Area to Explore
  • An Overview of the Region
  • Initial Adventure Sites
  • Notes for Dungeon Crawl Classics Judges
  • Modules in the Sandbox
  • A Sample Minor Adventure Site
  • The Great Outdoors
  • Some Centaurs for Sandbox Games
Daniel J. Bishop, aka Raven Crowking, is the author of Bone Hoard of the Dancing Horror, Prince Charming Reanimator, The Dread God Al-Khazadar, Three Nights in Portsmouth, and more. Now he shares his tips for designing and running adventures with you!

What a fantastic book! I've been looking for some really good advice along the lines of creating and running a good OSR sandbox game, and boy does this hit the spot. Terrific advice within these pages. I'm really looking forward to putting these ideas [...]

An Endzeitgeist.com review The third collection of essays on game design by Daniel J. Bishop, intended primarily, but by far not exclusively, for the DCC RPG, clocks in at 58 pages, 1 page front cover, 1 page editorial, 1 page ToC, 1 page SRD, l [...]

A very useful supplement, which explains in a simple way how to create a sandbox quite effective and complete. The author goes to the point and does not waste your time in long rambling. Essential for sandbox games. If the rest of titles are lik [...]

A fantastic treatise on the art and opportunity of the sandbox campaign. I am a fan of the first two items in this series, and although you do not require the first two to appreciate this work, you do see how they can build on each other. I pur [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
