Memnon's Gambit (WOIN)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Memnon’s Gambit is a short adventure intended to be used as an introduction to the What’s O.L.D. is N.E.W. (W.O.I.N.) roleplaying game. In this adventure, the characters move between the distant past, the present, the far future, and the end of time. Each of these periods serves to highlight one aspect of the W.O.I.N. game: O.L.D. for the past, N.O.W. for the present, N.E.W. for the future.

Memnon's Gambit is meant to be played in a 4-hour slot and includes 6 pregenerated characters.

At the beginning of time, the span of every mortal was written in the Book of Cilo. Around this tome sprang up myths and legends, some even believing that if their ending could be erased from theBook of Cilo, they would live forever. They were right.

By the middle of the 21st century, cancer and most diseases had been entirely eradicated. A little-known scientist named Robert Gibbons was credited with this momentous accomplishment. Gibbons vanished suddenly in the year 2015, but the work he left behind changed the world forever.

In the early 35th century, humanity was flourishing. Colonies on the Moon and Mars were thriving, and at long last, scientists were on the verge of breakthroughs that would enable faster than light travel. Then came the Human Extinction virus, H.E.X. It swept across the planet and through the colonies like fire on a prairie. Humanity ended.

At the end of time, Memnon sits alone, brooding. Words cannot capture his anguish, alone for longer than life existed. He seeks only death, but his end has been erased from the Book of Cilo.

Just got the adventure (been chomping a the bit to try WOIN on my group so this is perfect). So far it looks very well done but I was wondering if there are any suggestions for maps to use for the various locations? I know they are expensive to make for an adventure so understand why they were left out. I was just looking for some that would work well.

Thanks.

While working on the module, I used Saint Catherine's Monastery (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Catherine%27s_Monastery) as my inspiration for the general location. The basilica, from the first combat scene, was modeled on the Church of the Transfiguration (http://www.planetware.com/i/map/EGY/st-catherines-monastery-church-of-the-transfiguration-map.jpg). Lastly, I have a map I drew myself of the main library sections, I will see about getting it uploaded here.

Excellent, that is exactly the sort of information I was looking for. Just about done reading it and like it quite a bit. I love that you included several encounters that showcase the various systems in the game. Looks like a perfect introduction. Going to run it for my group this Saturday.

Not sure if you wanted all my comments here, but here goes. :)

So we played the first half of the adventure last Saturday night. It went very well and everyone enjoyed the adventure and system (it was everyone's first time to see it in action). Our Party was Kiryn Mathris, M.A.X. Beta, Ting Mao, and Victoria Woodall played as written. Here are a couple of comments.

Overall we all really enjoyed it. I had multiple players comment that they liked the new system and especially the setting of the adventure. It was well organized and written and for the most part I had no problem following what the party should be doing at any given time.

I had to search to find the Grade for the Pregens. I never found it on the character sheets and the Careers weren't listed. it seemed to be 5 based on maximum Pools listed and I did find it when I searched the PDF, but you may want to add it to the sheets. It would help when teaching new players.

M.A.X. Betas Health seemed very low...See more

That is awesome feedback!

The characters are in fact grade 5. I have their career choices on the spreadsheet but could include it somewhere in a revised document.

The reason M.A.X.'s health is lower is because Android's don't have a LUC score and the version of the rules I used when making those characters includes LUC in the Health calculation. I see that didn't make it into the printed N.E.W. book though.

The grolloc is Enormous size. It gets 15 SOAK from its exploit, and 5 from being massive. It's a tough fight for sure. With the grolloc not moving, the players also get their +1d6 bonus per round for pinned down along with their positional effects.

Ting is a tourist, and it isn't clear (as I see now!) is that Victoria and all the monastery staff submit to the authority of Jeffries. He wants the PCs and so Victoria and the rest of the staff won't stand in his way.

The magic system is part of O.L.D. which is still being tweaked, so Kiryn's...See more

Thanks for the response. I missed both the Massive Soak and Pinned Down rules. First time GMing it. :) Thanks for letting me know about those.

If everyone elses Health is going to be lower as a result of the adjustments, I think my group will have a harder time with the rest of the adventure. They've used up a lot of resources so far. May have to fit an overnight sleep into the schedule. :)

I think I missed some comments my players made too. Need to go back over my notes. I'll let you know.

Thanks.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
