Dungeon Questing

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Dungeon Questing is a classic fantasy roleplaying game based on Swords & Wizardry White Box but with a completely changed rules mechanic—this game only uses six-sided dice to handle anything in the game, and there is no levels or classes.

Players create their characters in the way they see fit and character advancement is skill based, where the advancement comes in small steps after each gaming session.

For those of you who still wants classes and levels, fear not! The classes and levels are still there as an optional rule for character creation and advancement, which is basically the original White Box using a 2d6 system instead.

So grab you sword and shield and start your adventures in the world of Dungeon Questing!

Features:

• Only six-sided dice are used; a 2d6 mechanic for action checks.

• Custom character creation using a skill-based system.

• All the White Box spells and monsters (plus a few additional ones!).

• Rules for strongholds and mass battles.

• A new treasure generation system.

• Classes and levels as an optional system for characters.

A free character sheet is avaiable on drivethrurpg, just search for the publisher's complete list of products to find it.

Took a gamble on my 2.50 to check this one out.
Is it worth 23 bucks for the hardcover? hmm, maaaaaybe.
I mean, it's a bit more than the competition tends to be for this sort of offering.

But the book is well organized. Page layout is clean. The concept, a d6 based variation of the usual 4 races 4 classes design is well executed. The book is a complete offering. I'm thinking of getting the Companion book for the game as well. But it is 15 bucks. That's 38 bucks for what is still a light weight offering. I'm probably going to purchase the pdfs, merge them into a single print out and go with that.

That likely makes me look cheap. But I'm used to paying half this for much the same material.
I would suggest the pdf file be offered for a few bucks more if the creator wishes to make a better profit. I'd have been ok with 5 bucks each for 10 bucks total.

Mikael,

I was wondering if you were still working on Galaxy Questing?

Since G+ is dead now, there's any other place where you're posting about Dungeon Quest, or where we can post our questions about the game?

Mikael - I was just looking at this again and appreciating a lot of it. But I again notice that both Vampires and Wraiths drain levels although there are no levels in the game. Also that staves give a bonus to spellcasting tests but there are no spellcasting tests in the RAW. Hoping to see those cleaned up. Cheers.

This is a very interesting game, but I still have a few of questions I can't find the answer to:

1) While it is clear using the alternative classes system how hit points are determined based on class and level, I can't see how hit points can increase using the default system beyond the starting hit points determined by race. Is the body development skill the only option for doing this?

2) Some spells (sleep for example) affect a number of creatures based on hit dice. How does this work if an NPC casts a sleep spell on the PC's if they don't have hit dice?

3) In the class advancement tables for the alternative classes system what does BHB stand for?

... I knew I'd forget a question.

4) Monster entries list a Hit Dice Equivalent score which is meant as a guide as to the challenge level of the monster. How does this work when there are no levels or hit dice for characters?

Hi there, sorry for the delay in my reply, I totally missed your message!
As for your questions:
1) The Body development skill is used for increasing HP. There are also optional rules in the Appendix for going beyond the limits in the standard rules by allowing attribute increases and adding more skill ranks. Other than that, it's the starting HP of your chosen race plus (CON+4 HP) per Skill Rank in Body Development (feel free to tinker with the numbers, it's your game now!)

2) You found a pesky bug in the system! You can either let only one PC become affect or you can roll 1d3 or 1d6 and let this number be the number of PC's affected. I'm going to adress the rules bugs in the fortcoming DQ Companion.

3) BHB stands for Base Hit Bonus, it's a term taken from its parent game - S&W Whitebox, it's your base attack bonus.

4) This is a remnant from its parent game and is best used with the optional Class and Level system presented in the Appendix. I created a table...See more

Is there any chance of getting an editable version of the text? I really like the game, but have an urge to stick my own house rules inline in the text for ease of reference during play. (I think this is because the game is so easily hackable.)

I only have the fully layed-out Publisher files, no word file, but still editable. You can export it into another format I guess.

Could you explain how energy draining monsters work in DQ? Reading the monster entries, they still refer to level draining. Since DQ doesn't have levels, this seems to be in error.

I see that Vampires still drain 'levels'. Using the option without levels, I'll interpret this as draining two Skill Levels

Love a lot of what Mikael is doing in this hack and how complete this is for $2.50. I found a few errors that I emailed to him, but I thought I'd post a few comments here:

1. I'm not crazy about spellcasters always having STAT + 1 spells per level. That doesn't feel very D&D to me. Easy enough to change to taste, of course. I'm thinking that each rank gives you STAT + 1 in that level, with lower levels getting cumulative +1, so that having Rank 3 Wizardry would give you INT + 1 3rd level spells, INT + 2 2nd level spells, and INT + 3 1st level spells.

2. Considering adding an Armour Proficiency skill. Each rank would allow you to ignore equivalent penalties (e.g. Rank 2 let's you ignore up to -2 penalties). Would also apply to spellcasting somehow. Maybe Rank = level of spells able to be cast (e.g. Rank 2 allows magician to wear armour and still cast 1st and 2nd level spells). Or allows full spellcasting while wearing armour up to that rank. Have to think more about that....See more

1. You can always change it to suit your desires. I like your variant, maybe incorporate that in a companion book with optional material.

2. There is a sidebar in the book presenting two options: 1.) Armor penalty, 2.) Restricting Armor use. As with your previous issue, I think it would be nice to have additional armor options for a companion book.

Search as I may, I don't see anything about armor penalties to spellcasting in a sidebar or anywhere else. Just the statement that you can't wear armour unless you are an Elf.

On that line, I looked through the new update and realized something else about magic: Staves give a bonus to spellcasting rolls, but I don't know what a spellcasting roll is. That is, there is no other place in the book to discuss such things and the magic system RAW is fire-and-forget with no rolling required.

Also, I noticed that both the Wraith and the Vampire still have level draining abilities.

I like it. It's just a pity that like all of the other White Box derivatives, it completely avoids the issue of the wilderness adventure and overland travel. It's probably fair enough for a game called Dungeon Question but still, a slight bump in page-count would have made for a more complete game.

I have added a few details about wilderness adventures, with overland travel, getting lost, fatigue and foraging. There's also the random encounter tables at the end of the bestiary.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
