FRA3 Blood Charge (2e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Stone Sceptre has been recovered! But will it be enough to stop the Raja of Solon? Ambuchar Devayam has massed 10,000 zombies on Ra-Khati's border. Only Gaumahavi, the Great Dragon of the Purple Wastes, stands between him and the Hidden Kingdom. Yet even she cannot face Ambuchar alone, for the evil raja has recovered an archaic Imaskari relic that renders him invincible

If Ra-Khati is to be saved and the player characters are to escape the raja's curse, Ambuchar Devayam must be stopped. But how? The player characters' search for a solution will embroil them in Tulgan politics, lure them to the Red Mountain Monastery's forbidden halls, and lead them into ancient Solon itself, where Ambuchar's slaves - both living and undead - toil to make him even more dangerous.

Blood Charge is the third adventure in the Empires Adventure Trilogy, taking place in The Forgotten Realms campaign world territories described in The Horde campaign set. The Empires Adventures Trilogy is set amidst the turbulent events portrayed in the Empires Novel Trilogy. This adventure is designed for four to eight player characters of levels 7-10.

Product History

FRA3: "Blood Charge" (1990), by Troy Denning, is the third adventure in the Empires adventure trilogy. It was published in November 1990.

Concluding the "FRA" Adventures. "Blood Charge" concludes the epic story of the "FRA" adventures, which tell of the conflict between the Hordelands countries of Ra-Khati and Solon. Here, the plauyers have the opportunity to influence the final battle between these countries … and engage in a final battle themselves with the evil leader of Solon.

The Novel Connections. As with the other "FRA" adventures, "Blood Charge" is set against the backdrop of the Empires trilogy of novels. The events here follow directly on from the events of Dragonwall (1990), where the Horde army was driven out of Shou Lung by Shou general Batu Min Ho. This gives the players the opportunity to rejoin the Horde … and possibly to convince them to become involved in the battle between Ra-Khati and Solon.

The horde eventually exits the adventure as they continue west, where they enter the pages of the final novel in the Empires trilogy, Crusade (1990), by David "Zeb" Cook, which was published in December.

Expanding Oriental Adventures. As with the previous adventures in the series, this one suggests the use of Oriental Adventures (1985), an AD&D 1e sourcebook. Spells and martial arts rules are both drawn from that book.

Expanding the Realms. This adventure continue to detail the Hordelands, which by now had received considerable description in The Horde Barbarian Campaign Setting (1990), by David "Zeb" Cook. As with the previous adventures in the "FRA" series, much of that detail is focused on the countries of Ra-Khati and Solon.

Future History. "Blood Charge" and Crusade together marked the end of the Empires event proper. However, TSR returned to the topic the next year with FR12: The Horde Campaign (1991). Where the "FRA" adventures only approached the events of the Empires novels peripherally, The Horde Campaign tackled them directly, detailing the battles of the Horde's military campaign and converting them to Battlesystem (1985, 1989, 1991). A final short story in Realms of Valor (1993) closed out TSR's coverage of the Horde.

The Hordelands of course remains a minor element of the Forgotten Realms setting that has been touched upon in more recent editions of D&D. Dragon #349 (November 2006) described the area fifteen years after Crusade in "The Horde" by Edward Bonny, Brian Cortijo, and Laszlo Koller; it was expanded with a 9-page web supplement. Then in Dragon #404 (October 2011), Wizards published "Character Themes: Fringes of Kara-Tur", by Chris Sims, which includes a Hordelands Nomad character theme.

About the Creators. Denning wrote all three of the "FRA" adventures as well as the Dragonwall novel. However, he'd probably become better known for what came next: his co-authorship of Dark Sun (1991) and his creation of The Prism Pentad series of novels (1991-1993) for Dark Sun.

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
