Contrapposto is a storytelling game about planning an art heist, designed to be played discreetly in an actual art museum.

3-5 players take on the roles of a team of amateur thieves hired to obtain a work of art. All players work together to identify which piece of art they’re after and plan how to steal it while balancing the team’s odd assortment of skills & hangups.

In about an hour and a half, the team will case the joint, plan their caper & try to convince each other that this will work.

And if the group can tolerate each other long enough to complete their scheme, it just might!

Contrapposto is part improv comedy and part exercise in teamwork, with a healthy respect for art & museums thrown in. Don't worry: no actual laws should be broken while playing! It's largely a fun way to visit an art museum with a group of friends.

The phases of the game are:

Introductions - We’ll draw cards that assign us aspects our characters. Then we'll go around the circle, introducing ourselves in character.

Casing the Joint - We’ll draw one shared card describing the work of art we’re meant to steal. Then we’ll move through the museum, debating which piece that card refers to.

Planning - We’ll come up with a nice, logical, easy-does-it, can’t-go-wrong plan to steal the art.

Rehearsal - When it comes to executing a heist smoothly, you can’t just wing it. We’ll need to discretely rehearse the plan without rousing any suspicion.

You in? - After the rehearsal, we’ll have a chance to vote out any Rats in the crew and try to convince each other that this will work

Aftermath - We’ll all play a Followthrough card to show what we do on the day of the heist. If we haven’t been betrayed, we’ll tally up our scores to see if we got away with it!

Bought this game. Tested in Moscow State Museum of Finest Arts. This game is AMAZING! But it realy need more cards or sets. At least more Secret sets! After a second game everybody know a typical Rat behavior. Or maybe it need another Rat mechanic for replayability...

Hi, I was given this as a gift back in October and am wondering if there is a difference between this version and the version I have.

Sound really original but i dont understand the rules...ok to look for the right thing to take away, but after you make a scenario for your action? You cannot play it really so how could you test it? You are creating the storytelling just in the middle of the museum??? Dont see the cards working also???

Hi Laurent,

The game takes you all the way through the planning and up to a rehearsal of the plan in the space, with actions mimed in the way that dancers 'mark' a rehearsal without fully executing each step.

Then to resolve whether the heist succeeds on the actual day of the plan, players add up the points they've earned throughout the game (for things like using your character's skill in the plan and staying true to the weird behavioral quirks you've been assigned), and at the end of the game, those points are tallied up to help you complete the story and determine whether or not you've accomplished your mission.

Will the title card of the printed version include the typo 'discretely' like in the thumbnail or the correct 'discreetly' like in your description?

Ha, I had just submitted the updated thumbnail & deck with that corrected. Good catch though.

That sounds like a remarkably bad idea. :P

How so?

The groups we've played with have found it lots of fun, and the museums where we've played so far have had no problems with it (once we've told them what we're up to after the game).

Rule #1 is that if your behavior prompts a museum employee to correct your behavior or ask what you're up to, your plot has been discovered, and you all lose the game. So the game reinforces the importance of not ruining other museum attendees' experiences.

Of course that requires you play with people who can handle themselves responsibly, but those are the people with whom we think it's fun to play this kind of game anyway!

It seems workable, as players are all quietly talking and pass some playing-cards around, that is all.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
