Overton

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Overton is a medium sized town sitting next to the river Tonbrook, surrounded by rolling hills and calm forests. It makes a convenient stopping point for coach travellers on the River Road and for barge traffic sailing up- and down-river, so it sees a decent amount of coming and going. Money changes hands, people live their lives, and apart from the occasional goblin sighting it’s the safest and quietest town you could hope to find.

Except of course that’s not true. There are ancient tombs under those hills, and the reason the woods seem calm is because the monsters within have terrified the locals into immobility. Rumours whisper of cultists behind every door, of lycanthropes working the barges, and that the mayor is a hollow shell occupied by a sorcerous tapeworm. Overton’s placid exterior hides a boiling core of adventure waiting to break loose; a band of player characters are just the folk to unleash the chaos and – if the people of Overton are lucky – hang around long enough to shove any genies they’ve released back into their respective bottles.

Overton is a steading suitable for a party of player characters to use as a base camp for exploring the surrounding area. Presented here are details of the town, several locations of interest to adventurers, and a handful of important NPCs. It’s written with an eye to use with Dungeon World but could be easily ported to other fantasy systems.

Great starting city, and free! I used it as the setting for a city-based campaign and it got great response from my players. I didn't mind that the document was short/brief, because we easily flesched out many other aspects of the city through rolepl [...]

It is a fact you cannot expect much from a 18-page free setting but I still had the expectation at least it had a map of the area to explore. The descriptions are vague and all the burden of the development falls over the DM who only receives some idea [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
