Primeval Thule Campaign Setting (for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Primeval Thule, a campaign setting compatible with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. (For other game systems, go back to our publisher page and select the version you want.)

Welcome to Thule, a primordial land of fierce barbarians, elder horrors, and savage wilderness. In this ancient age, humankind is a young race, newly arisen on a monster-haunted Earth. Cities of cruel spledor lie scattered across the great lands of the north like a handful of gems strewn from a dead thief's hand.

This is a doomed age, a time of great deeds and inhuman terror destined to be lost and forgotten beneath the numbing cloak of endless winter. But for one glittering moment, Thule lives—and it is a fierce, cruel, splendid, and marvelous moment indeed.

This tome provides you everything you need to introduce the world of Thule to the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. Inside, you will find:

  • A new character race, the Atlanteans;
  • 19 heroic narratives such as free blade, ice reaver, and star-lore adept;
  • Over 40 new beasts, monsters, and villains to challenge your players;
  • 3 ready-to-play adventures to begin your campaign;
  • A detailed description of Quodeth, City of Thieves, the perfect home for bold heroes;
  • And a whole continent of savage adventure to explore!

Since I've already bought my copy, I thought I'd publish my review here.

Primeval Thule Campaign Setting

Authors: Richard Baker, David Noonan, and Stephen Schubert

Some may like what I have to say about this book, and some may not. As usual, Your Mileage May Vary. This 272 page book from relative newcomer Sasquatch Games presents a campaign setting like no other. Folks, if there were ever a campaign setting made especially for me, it could not be any better than Primeval Thule.

Unlike almost every other medieval type fantasy setting, this book is not about Kings and Queens, or elegant cities - the basic medieval times rolled liberally with various monsters both creature and human. This book is a =lot= more like "Conan the Barbarian", or "King Kull of Atlantis", or "John Carter of Mars", or "Krull". Magic is relatively rare and generally leads Mages into deeper and deeper evils. There are =no= Monks. It is a setting...See more

So a few questions to people that have purchased this product. How friendly is this book to 3pp materials? Does this lend itself to, say, the Psionics or "Path of War" books from Dreamscarred Press?
I can imagine a book like this easily blends into the new Horror rules from Paizo, but how about the Hybrid and Occult rules?
Is there any information for the world outside of "Thule"? While there's a lot of information, knowing who I am running for, I fully expect there to be a boat built and people to sail off to Destinations Unknown... "I'm going to become the Scorpion King!!!".

I'm really interested in this book as a possible setting for a future campaign, but I have a large collection of 3pp that I also enjoy using, and I'm just not sure if I can justify the purchase, without proper flexibility.

I grew up on the old Robert E. Howard and Clark Ashton Smith fantasy fiction (I'm also a huge fan of Lovecraft). I was very excited to hear that a campaign setting had been designed to capture the feel of those old stories. And then my friend, who bought the book, told me he didn't get far into reading it before coming across a reference to a "dwarven temple." What are dwarves doing in a setting based on the stories of REH and CAS? Why do d20 game designers feel like they must cram the (A)D&D menagerie of demihumans into every setting? Other non-human races, exotic and isolated, are what characterize the early fantasy fiction, not elves, dwarves and halflings. Obviously Primeval Thule doesn't live up to the promise of capturing the atmosphere of those stories much at all.

I know I sound like a jerk here, but seriously, stop doing that. That was one of the mistakes TSR made, post-Gygax, being afraid that their product wouldn't sell if it strayed too far from what AD&D players were...See more

i agree with you on the races but you can just ignore that part with no consequence. other than that annoying little bit i think theyve done a great job with the setting, though the role of narratives could be a little more clearly defined. i just skip the races and use narratives in place of backgrounds. im quite pleased, a great product well done

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
