AUTHOR'S NOTE

As some commenters have mentioned, there are mentions of a couple of possible additions to this book. It's been a long while and I can say that those will not be appearing in full book form. I will try to, at some point, release what I have written for these books as PWYW PDFs as my schedule allows.

On its own, Transylvanian Adventures is playable. But for those who are looking to integrate spellcasters, add more firepower to the Polymath, or use more thematic adversaries, it will feel incomplete without a resource such as Dungeon Crawl Classics.

I apologize that I could not deliver on the commitment of two more volumes in the series. I extend my sincere gratitude for those who have worked around this issue and invite them to share in the discussion how elements of TA have been used in those games or how TA campaigns have been successful (or not) despite these limitations.

Set aside those “Domains of Despair” for a World of Adventure!

Ancient secrets and epic adversaries lie buried in a land of nightmares, mists and supersition. Frightened innkeepers bolt their doors for fear of the stranger at the threshold. Stoic villagers stand helpless against horrors beyond belief.

It is up to you to turn back the tide of darkness. And it all starts here!

Transylvanian Adventures is a supplement for Goodman Games’ Dungeon Crawl Classics roleplaying game. This book features new character classes and rule enhancements to take you back to the land where modern horror began.

So from what I gather, this game is incomplete. What's missing? Monsters? Magic? I'm not particularly concerned with information on Transylvania, as I can just look up information about the country/time period myself.

I can fill monsters in with this: https://goodman-games.com/store/product/nightworld-tabletop-rpg-monster-manual-for-dcc-rpg-print-pdf/

Not sure what I'd do about the magic, though...

Anyway, what are your experiences as to the completeness of this game?

The big part that's missing is custom spells to fit the setting. I have a couple of examples in the book (a circle of protection spell being one example). But a full spell section is the biggest missing part.

This could be alleviated in a few different ways. One is using the Wizard from DCC RPG as written. All the classes here were extensively playtested against other DCC RPG classes at the time. The DCC RPG core classses are a *little* more powerful than the TA classes but it's largely negligible in my experience. You could also try using classes from Mutant Crawl Chronicles or another DCC RPG publication. Theoretically, it should work fine.

As written, TA's only real "spellcaster" is the Polymath. And that's more ritual spellcasting than the spellcasters we are used to seeing. To finish out the Polymath, I'd recommend letting them cast a subset of the Cleric spells from DCC RPG but as rituals (namely, it just takes them longer to cast). Or, if you are good with them casting...See more

On page 110, it says classes other than Halfbreeds can't max out Weapon Mastery with upgrades, because only the Halfbreed gets it for free at level 1. However, the section detailing various classes doesn't mention this particular ability at all, regardless of class. Is this an accidental omission in the class section, or a mistake on page 110?

Hi Craig,
I'm sorry for the slow reply. I'm just now seeing this question. I dug back through the notes and it appears that was left in from an earlier version of the Halfbreed. Initially, the Halfbreed started out with the initial Weapon Mastery upgrade (meaning all its trained weapon attacks counted as "silvered").

That was changed due to the balance among the classes.

If you'd like to reinstate it, then allow the Halfbreed to take that as one of its Dark Gifts at character creation.

I apologize for the confusion.

I've read somewhere there is supposed to be "The Hanging Judge’s Guide to Transylvania" and "The Transylvanian Grimoire" as supplements. Were they released? Or abandoned?

I have to say, when reading into this book it struck me as original and a good buy. Sometimes rules presentation could be improved (as it modifies the original DCC rules quite a bit), but all in all it seems like very appealing package. Looking forward to further products and also to playing this baby.

Page 40 appears to be blank, intentional white space or is something missing?

Intentional. Nothing missing. Page numbering spilled out to the blank pages that are between chapters.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
