Geoff Gillan's The Past Is Doomed

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Arkham in the 1990s: The famous witch-haunted city of Lovecraft's day may still have one foot in the past, but as the 21st century looms, horrors of a more contemporary nature shatter its quiet contemplation.

It starts with the unexplained disappearance of a famous author, Ernst Zabrich; a scholar with some controversial ideas of global conspiracy. Visiting Arkham to research these shadowy forces, this paranoid writer simply vanishes ... apparently without a trace.

But then, strange news emerges ... an improbable series of apparently unconnected events -- a literal trail of destruction -- has consumed every last copy of Zabrich's upcoming book. Somebody of considerable means clearly does not want this "crackpot volume" to reach the masses ... but why?

The truth hides behind a tangled web of clues ... Can Arkham's protectors unravel this apparent conspiracy before the city is forever changed by shadowy forces? Because this time ... it's not only the city's future that is in peril ... but also its past!

This detailed scenario combines a challenging mystery, pulse-pounding action and mind-expanding concepts in a unique blend typical of the best of Geoff Gillan's writing for Call of Cthulhu (Horror on the Orient Express, Regiment of Dread). Includes 13 pages of lavishly-rendered handouts.

Originally written in 1995 and published in the (text-based) online Chaosium Digest, this version entirely revamps and expands Geoff Gillan's original manuscript text, and sets it amid evocative art and detailed handouts. Provided in both a screen-friendly (texture rich) version and a high-contrast printer-friendly version.

This is a creepy adventure full of ambience and oddness. It has an unusual but appropriate feel for a cthulhu scenario. Certainly worth getting to check out. [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
