Insight Fantasy Core Rules

All your actions can change the story.

If you don’t like being a spectator, listening to the Game Master reading you a story all evening, Insight Fantasy should be your #1 choice because everything you do can have an impact on the story as the GM knows it.

Insight Fantasy has all the mechanisms you would expect from a fantasy RPG, but the main difference is the player’s ability to make significant changes to the story through their Player Characters.

Maybe you want to do something unexpected, something not described in the GM’s notes. Maybe you discover something that the GM didn’t know anything about. This is not only possible when playing Insight Fantasy; it is a major part of the game.

The world is full of surprises yet to be discovered. Many items, persons, buildings, and locations have secrets to be revealed, secrets not known even to the GM. This insight is for the Player Characters to discover, Insight that may change the outcome of their adventures or even change the world.

This book features

  • Core Rules and Mechanics
  • Player Character Generation
  • Skills and Actions
  • Weapons and Armor
  • Equipment
  • Magic Spells
  • Divine Powers
  • Psionics
  • Alchemy
  • and how to Acquire Insight and Change the Story

The GM should also have a copy of the Game Master’s Compendium, which describes how to create open and changeable adventures.

Insight Fantasy is a further development of the Insight RPG System, a universal classless system. The list of Skills has been modified to suit a fantasy setting, and some system functions have been changed, but—all in all—the core system should be familiar for those who have played the Insight RPG System. You do not need the Insight RPG System Core Rulebook to play Insight Fantasy; it is a stand-alone system.

Select your Skills and create a unique Player Character

You can focus on combat skills and become an able fighter, you can select magic skills and become a great wizard, but you can also select a wide range of knowledge skills, mental skills and social skill that makes your player character able to manipulate people, discover secrets and change the story.

The way you can change the story follows the same game mechanics as everything else (such as combat, crafting, magic, etc.) and it is not up to you, as a player, to make the changes. Changes to the story are made through the player characters, and can only be made through the use of skills. The better you are at changing the outcome of your adventures, the higher the reward.

Character Sheets can be downloaded here (for Free)

You can also get a copy of the Game Master Screen Insets for Insight Fantasy here (can be used as cheat sheets)

I absolutely love this system and approach to an RPG. The Open Protean World concept is very cool for me as a GM. I love the mechanics around acquiring insight! I'm currently running the game and I really enjoy this system.

I noticed this book is tagged as "Standalone Insight RPG" and I am desperately hoping that someday there will be an Insight Sci-Fi RPG too! The Open Protean World concept would work so well for a space exploration style of game.

I believe I read a review last year that said the system was hardly usable due to not having any summary lists over the large amount of skills and actions. Was this ever addressed? If not are there plans for it to be? This is what will most likely determine whether or not it will be my group's next system.

Very reminiscent of White Wolf's systems, at least as far as dice are concerned. Overall I just recently read through this and love it. I haven't tried running it but I like how the system is so simple. I will definitely be back to pick up the hardcover at some point so I can run it with a group of players and see how it plays, but so far I like it just from reading it.

Bought 2 of the Indight Core Fantasy Softcover and 2 GM. Thank you for being able to get the 2 PDF and look at them. It lead me to buying the print versions here as well as 3 of the Generic Insight books on Amazon. My question is what are some of the differences between Insight and Insight Fantasy. Is damage and skills done the same?

Will get PDF of Insight next month

Thank you. Insight Fantasy uses the same core concepts as the generic Insight RPG but has more focus on skills and unique character generation. There are certain changes to the combat system and damage. You can read more here: http://www.insight-rpg.com/what-is-insight-fantasy/ and here: http://www.insight-rpg.com/news/

I like that there are hit locations and (possibly) the change story mechanism. Is there any way we could know a bit more about the magic system? Kinda important and the only review I could find online is here on drivethru and its not very...insightful.

I'm a little confused on the 'Player changes the story' aspect. The preview lists as this being done via the social skills Sense Motive, Bluff, etc. but isn't that how most D20/3.5 games work already? Is there a unique mechanic here?

The Player Characters can, by using their skills, investigate events and objects, draw logical conclusions, influence and affect NPCs and creatures, and reveal secrets even unknown to the Game Master. The GM must adapt to the changes, and continue as if nothing unexpected has happened. Changing the story is significant for the players; the more they change the story, the more they are rewarded. The reward is measured in reputation and influence, which is necessary for the player character’s progression.

The story-changing-mechanic is an integrated part of the game mechanics, just like combat and other interactions and follows a set of rules. Some player characters will become better at changing the story in their favor while some will focus on combat, stealth, crafting, magic, etc., depending on which skills they choose. A player cannot make changes all the time, and all changes will not be in favor for the players.

In Insight Fantasy, knowledge, reasoning, and social skills are equally...See more

Because of transparent layers/images, the file size increases when the watermarking is added. I will try to reduce the number of transparent objects and publish an update as soon as possible.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
